INTRODUCTION
Yoruba music is a pattern/style of music practiced by the Yoruba people of Western Nigeria,
Benin Republic, Togo, and other parts of the world. It is perhaps best known for its extremely
advanced drumming tradition and techniques.
History of the popular music can be traced to the 19th and 20th centuries by the Christian
missionaries. Juju, Fuji, Waka, and Sakara are among the popular genres of music that
originated among the Yoruba people.
However, it is generally believed that these genres of music originated from the folk music
among our people during the colonial era, and gradually grew to become popular in the
country after independence in the 1960s.
Today, it is agreed that Yoruba music has popularized the Cultural Values and heritage of the
people at home and in the diaspora.

propagating the continuous existence of the language and values through music.
